Meaning and origin of the Bassani last name
Meaning of the Bassani last name: from Bassano. Bassani is a name of origin for someone from Bassano, most often Bassano del Grappa in the province of Vicenza, a market town at a crossing of the Brenta, where the river leaves the Alps for the Venetian plain. The town was part of the Venetian Republic from 1404, and in the 16th century it was famous for its school of painters, the Da Ponte family, known as "the Bassano". The plural form with -i is typical of the Veneto, Lombardy and Emilia, while the singular Bassano is also a surname, more common in southern Italy. Some Bassani families emigrated to France, Argentina and Brazil between about 1880 and 1920. In modern times the writer Giorgio Bassani, author of The Garden of the Finzi-Continis, made the name known worldwide.
