It can be an occupational name for a grower or seller of hops, from Middle Low German hoppe, "hop", used in brewing beer. It can also be a nickname for a restless or lively person, from hoppen, "to hop, to jump". The surname is common in northern and eastern Germany, especially Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt and Lower Saxony, and in the Hanseatic towns of the Baltic. Hops were grown widely in northern Germany for beer, and the Hanseatic towns of Hamburg, Bremen and Lübeck exported beer across the Baltic. Related forms include Hopp and Hoppmann. The name is also found in Poland, where some families of German origin settled. Many Hoppe families emigrated to the United States in the 19th century, settling in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Illinois.
