Meaning and origin of the Röder last name

Meaning of the Röder last name: settler on cleared land. Röder is a German name for a settler who lived on or worked newly cleared land, from Middle High German rode, "clearing", related to roden, "to grub up, to clear". The great clearances of the 11th to 13th centuries opened up much of the German forest to farming. Today it clusters in Thuringia, Saxony, Hesse and Franconia. Medieval rulers, monasteries and lords encouraged settlers to clear forest and marsh, and the people who did this work were often named for it, giving surnames such as Röder, Roder, Rodemann and Reuter. Place names ending in -rode and -roda, such as Wernigerode and Osterode, record the same clearings. The spelling Roeder is used where the umlaut is not available. Many Röder families emigrated to the United States in the 19th century, where the name was often written Roeder or Rader, and settled in Pennsylvania, Ohio and the Midwest.
