Meaning and origin of the Giorgi last name

Meaning of the Giorgi last name: son of Giorgio (George). Giorgi is a patronymic plural from Giorgio, the Italian form of George, from Greek geōrgos, "farmer". The cult of Saint George, the soldier saint and dragon slayer, made the name popular in medieval Italy, especially in Liguria, where Genoa took him as patron. The -i ending marks the surname as a central and northern form, frequent in Tuscany, the Marche and Rome. Southern Italy prefers Di Giorgio. In Italy, George was also honoured in Venice, where the island monastery of San Giorgio Maggiore was a major religious house, and in Ferrara, where he is patron of the city. Variant surnames include Giorgetti, Giorgini and Zorzi, the Venetian form. The name is also found in Corsica and in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland. Giorgi families emigrated from Tuscany and the Marche to France, Argentina and the United States between about 1880 and 1920.
