Meaning and origin of the Snyder last name

Meaning of the Snyder last name: tailor. Snyder is the American spelling of the Dutch occupational name Snijder, "tailor", from snijden, "to cut", and it was also adopted by many German Schneiders settling in Pennsylvania and New York. The tailor cut and made clothes to order and was found in every town and village. Snyder became one of the most common surnames in the United States, where it is far more frequent than in Europe. In the Netherlands the occupational name appears as Snijder, Snyders and de Snijder, and in Flanders as Snyders. The Dutch settlers of New Netherland, later New York, brought the name to North America in the 17th century. A much larger wave of German Schneiders arrived through Philadelphia in the 18th century, and English-speaking clerks wrote their name as Snider or Snyder, the form that became standard. Census figures place Snyder among the most common surnames in the United States, especially in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana.
