Meaning and origin of the Bruns last name
Meaning of the Bruns last name: son of Brun. Bruns is a North German patronymic meaning "son of Brun". Brun was an old Saxon personal name from brūn, "brown", and was borne by members of the Ottonian dynasty, including Bruno, archbishop of Cologne. The genitive -s ending marks the name as Low German, and it is most common in Lower Saxony, Westphalia and around Bremen and Oldenburg. Many emigrants from these regions settled in Ohio, Illinois and Missouri. Bruno of Cologne, brother of the emperor Otto I, was archbishop of Cologne and duke of Lotharingia in the 10th century, and another Saint Bruno founded the Carthusian order in the 11th century. These saints made the personal name popular across Germany. In Low German areas, -s endings mark patronymic surnames, as in Hinrichs and Peters. The related name Brun is found in Scandinavia and France, and Bruno in Italy. Bruns families from Lower Saxony and Westphalia emigrated to the United States in the 19th century.
