Meaning and origin of the Conroy last name

Meaning of the Conroy last name: anglicized form of several Gaelic names. Conroy is a shared anglicization of several Gaelic names, including Ó Conraoi of Galway, Mac Conraoi of the same county, and Ó Maolchonaire, the hereditary poets and historians of the O'Connors of Connacht in Roscommon. One of the Ó Maolchonaire scholars, Fearfeasa, helped compile the Annals of the Four Masters. Because Conraoi sounded like rí, "king", some Galway families anglicized it as King. The Ó Maolchonaire family had their main seat at Ballymulconry in Roscommon. The name is now common in Galway, Roscommon and Dublin, and many Conroys emigrated to the United States, England and Australia in the 19th century.
