Meaning of the Duggan last name: descendant of Dubhagán ("little dark one"). Duggan comes from Ó Dubhagáin, "descendant of Dubhagán", a diminutive of dubh, "dark, black". The best-known sept were a learned family of Uí Maine in east Galway, where Seán Mór Ó Dubhagáin, master poet to the O'Kellys, wrote a famous topographical poem in the 14th century. Other Duggans belonged to Fermoy in County Cork, and the name is now most common in Cork, Waterford and Tipperary. Seán Mór Ó Dubhagáin, who died in 1372, was ollamh, or master poet, to the O'Kellys of Uí Maine, and his poem on the families and territories of Meath and Leinster is a key source for Irish history. In Cork, the Fermoy family of the name were among the early lords of that region. Spelling variants include Dugan, Doogan and Duggin. Many Duggans emigrated to England, the United States and Australia in the 19th century.
