Meaning and origin of the Holland last name

Meaning of the Holland last name: from Holland in Lincolnshire or Lancashire. Holland is usually an English place-name surname from places called Holland, from Old English hōh, "spur of land", and land, "land". The Holland district of Lincolnshire and the village of Up Holland in Lancashire are the main sources. The Hollands of Upholland rose to be Earls of Kent and Dukes of Exeter in the 14th century. In Ireland the name also anglicized Ó hÓileáin of Cork, and occasionally means an immigrant from the Dutch province. The Holland district was one of the three historic parts of Lincolnshire, a low-lying area of fens. Thomas Holland, 1st Earl of Kent, married Joan of Kent, so their sons were half-brothers of Richard II. Holland families emigrated early to Virginia and New England, and later to Australia.
