Meaning and origin of the Riley last name

Meaning of the Riley last name: from Riley in Lancashire ("rye clearing"). Riley has two main roots. In England it comes from places called Riley or Ryley in Lancashire and Devon, from Old English ryge, "rye", and lēah, "woodland clearing", so a clearing where rye was grown. In Ireland it is also a spelling of O'Reilly, from Ó Raghallaigh. The English name is strongest in Lancashire and Yorkshire, and both strands came together in the United States. English Rileys appear in medieval Lancashire and Yorkshire as de Ryley. The Irish O'Reilly family, Ó Raghallaigh, were lords of East Breifne, now County Cavan, and were among the most powerful families of medieval Ulster. Many Irish families dropped the O' prefix in the 18th and 19th centuries, and in Britain and America the form Riley became common. The name is now widespread in England, Ireland, the United States and Australia.
