Meaning and origin of the Welch last name

Meaning of the Welch last name: welshman. Welch means "Welshman", from Middle English walsche, from Old English wælisc, "foreigner, Briton", the word the Anglo-Saxons used for the native Britons. It was a name for someone from Wales or with Welsh connections, and it is most common along the English side of the Welsh border, in Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Shropshire. In Ireland the same word gave Walsh, and Welch is often an American spelling of either. The same Old English word wealh gave the name Wales and the Welsh people, and it appears in place names such as Walworth. In medieval records the surname appears as le Waleys and le Walsh from the 13th century. In Scotland, Welsh and Walsh are also found, especially in the south-west. Welch families settled early in the American colonies, and the name is now widespread in the United States.
