Meaning and origin of the Wenzel last name

Meaning of the Wenzel last name: from Wenceslas (Václav). Wenzel is the German form of the Czech personal name Václav, Latin Wenceslaus, "greater glory". Saint Wenceslas, the 10th-century duke of Bohemia, was the patron of the Czech lands, and the name spread to German speakers in Bohemia, Silesia and Saxony. The surname is most common in eastern Germany, Thuringia and Franconia, and among families with Sudeten German roots who settled in Bavaria after 1945. Wenceslas was murdered by his brother Boleslaus around 935 and was soon venerated as a martyr; he is the "Good King Wenceslas" of the English carol. Wenceslaus of Luxembourg was elected King of the Romans in 1376. Variant spellings include Wentzel and Wenzl, and many Wenzel families emigrated to the United States in the 19th century.
